The Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set

Since 1977 Dungeons & Dragons has been available in a basic 'starter set' aimed at novice players  The original Dungeons & Dragons basic set was written by J. Eric Holmes and was essentially a simple and more accessible version of the original Dungeons and Dragons rules devised by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson and first realised in 1974.  Later versions expanded on the basic (levels 1-3 play) rules and eventually evolved into their own product line, separate from the 'Advanced Dungeons and Dragons' game.  Starter sets have always been popular and the iconic 1983 'Red Box' Basic set by Frank Mentzer is said to be the best selling Dungeons & Dragons product in the history of the game.

Anyway, enough of the history lesson I hear you say!  The 'Fifth Edition' of Dungeons and Dragons is just around the corner and this week Wizards Of The Coast unveiled details of the latest starter set, which has a release date of 15th July.

FREE RPG DAY 2014!

It's FREE RPG Day 2014 today!

Unfortunately for us here in the UK participating retailers are few and far between, however you can find the nearest participating shop on the website here.

I'm hoping to run a Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG session in Burton on Trent at the Raiders Of The Game Cupboard event.  I'll be using a free module 'Tower Out Of Time'  provided for the event.  Goodman Games really do support Free RPG Day very well, providing a free module in print and also free PDFs for folk like me who are unable to get to a participating shop.  Have a great day whatever you're doing!

Cheers,

Bruce
